USDA Invests in Nationwide Nutrition Hub Expansion

New outlets are intended to improve food security and address diet-related diseases in underserved communities.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced a $4.5 million investment to establish three new USDA Nutrition Hubs across the U.S., attempting to enhance food and nutrition security and prevent diet-related chronic diseases, particularly in underserved communities. These hubs will build on the pilot program initiated last year in collaboration with Southern University and A&M College, under the ASCEND for Better Health initiative.

“Equitable access to healthy, safe, and affordable foods that promote optimal health and well-being can have a significant impact in reducing rates of diet-related chronic diseases, including many cancers,” said USDA Chief Scientist and Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics Chavonda Jacobs-Young. “When people have tailored tools, resources, and knowledge, they are empowered to take a more active role in managing their nutrition and health.”

Funded by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), the Nutrition Hubs seek to deliver science-based information tailored to communities such as “Tribal, Hispanic, and Insular Areas.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Under Secretary Jacobs-Young to seek God’s guidance as she oversees the effort to support nutrition in underserved communities.
  • For USDA officials as they facilitate these Nutrition Hubs for managing nutrition and health.
  • For wisdom for Secretary Vilsack as he heads the USDA and provides oversight for nutrition programs.
